Chapter 17

The next hour is filled with singing and dancing––a wonderful story unfolding between talented actors, unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s a kind of magic that I didn’t even know existed. Everything fades into the background as I watch the stage with rapt attention. The show is a reenactment of the common fairy tale known as “Little Red Riding Hood,” but in this case, the wolf is a real shifter. He shifts between man and wolf and has a love story with the girl, but she doesn’t know about his wolf side. The huntsman is the girl’s other love interest, who actually turns out to be the villain. The poor wolf shifter is so misunderstood, so afraid to tell Red the truth of his identity.

Just as things are getting good, the lights lift.

“What?” I squawk. “It’s over?”

Anders chuckles. His arm is on the back of my chair, and he curls it around my shoulders, pulling me in. “This is only a little intermission. Don’t worry. In ten minutes they’ll start the rest of the show.”

“Oh, good.” My voice trails off when I notice his ice blue eyes staring at the mark he inflicted on my neck like it’s his own personal brand.

“I have to go to the bathroom.” I jump up and run out of the theater box. I don’t really have to go, but ten minutes away from Anders is just what I need right now.

The second I step outside, however, I think leaving was a mistake.

The lobby is filled with large shifter men and their stylish wives, and there are far more men than women. They’re not all married, I know that. I also know I’m not safe here. Not with men like these. The crowd thickens, and I catch Anders among them. He’s looking for me. My heart rate speeds as I duck into the crowd, dodging bodies as I go. I bump into a few people who shoot me scathing looks. My cheeks prickle, but I don’t stop to apologize. I need to get out of here. I don’t want him to show me off to these people… or worse. I spot a dark hallway and hurry inside. Hopefully I can hide out here until the intermission is over. It’s empty in here and cold and perfect. I lean against the wall, closing my eyes and catching my breath.

Someone grabs my arm, and I jump. “Hey!” My training kicks in, and I jerk away, readying my stance.

“It’s only me.” Ryne looms over me. His eyes flick to the poppy behind my ear, and his gaze softens for a brief moment. That one look sends my mind reeling. I’m angry. I’m thrilled. I don’t know what I am.

“You’ve been avoiding me.” I say the thing I’ve wanted to say for what feels like forever. “Why?”

He stares at me for a long moment, and I think maybe he won’t answer me at all. “Because I want to keep you safe,” he whispers at last. And then he glares at me, but it’s not as though any of this is my problem.
